The Olympics have ended and many of us were inspired watching these Olympic champions from various countries. It was inspiring. Since I haven’t posted anything for a long time I thought it would be appropriate to post what makes an Olympic champion.

In Ecclesiastes 9:10 it says, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might.”

1 Corinthians 9:24 says, “Do you not know that in a race all the runners compete, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things.”

When an athlete competes he visions himself doing the best he can. He looks at the goal before him and does his best. He has already practice, tones his body, and used self-control in every area of his life. The athlete is ready to win and gives his all to achieve his goal. The following are other qualities of a champion.

“Characteristics and qualities of champions
1. They set goals and purposes for their endeavors
2. Determination and motivation
3. They don't deviate from the path or course set forth
4. Willingness to sacrifice and forgo a present pleasure to achieve a distant goal
5. Ability to endure pain, criticism, and major set backs
6. Talent for the particular sport
7. A very high work effort and discipline to endure long periods of training
8. A great coach, mentor, inspiration, and/or successful and encouraging peers that make you believe in the unbelievable and do things that you never hoped was possible
9. Continuous improvement (never content with the present state--always desire to become better)
10. No procrastination or defeatist attitude; they learn early to remove toxic emotions and attitudes
11. When it gets rough, they put in extra efforts and rise to the occasion
12. They remain calm in important situations and push aside nervousness
13. A knowledge that eating right, getting proper sleep, and some R & R is necessary for sanity check and long endurance “Lars G. Harrison
In every area of our lives we can use these principles. We can be champions in our jobs, homes, communities, and church. The following is an Ancient story, Milo of Kroton. Hope you enjoy it and become inspired.

________________________________________
Milo of Kroton
• Wrestler
• Six-time Olympic victor:

“One of the most legendary athletes in the ancient world, Milo of Kroton, wore the victor's crown at Olympia no less than six times. Born in southern Italy, where Greece had many colonies, Milo won the boys' wrestling contest in 540 BCE.
He returned eight years later to win the first of five consecutive wrestling titles, a feat that seems incredible by modern standards. Rarely do modern-day Olympians compete in more than two or three Olympiads over the course of a career. Much like the boxer George Foreman, Milo resisted retirement: By the time of the 67th Olympiad in 512 BCE, Milo was probably forty or more years old but he competed anyhow. The challenger won not by overpowering Milo, but by avoiding the older wrestler and wearing him out.
According to our ancient sources, Milo enjoyed showing off his unrivaled strength. For instance, he would clasp a pomegranate in his hand and have others try to take it away from him. Even though he was holding it so tightly that no one could remove it, he never damaged the fruit. Sometimes, he would stand on a greased iron disk and challenge others to push him off of it. Another of his favorite exhibitions was tying a cord around his forehead, holding his breath, and breaking the cord with his bulging forehead veins. Other times, the wrestler would stand with his right arm at his side, his elbow against him, and hold out his hand with thumb pointed upwards and fingers spread. No one could successfully bend even his little finger.
Milo excelled even in warfare. When a neighboring town attacked Kroton, Milo entered the battle wearing his Olympic crowns and dressed like Herakles, in lion's skin and brandishing a club, and led his fellow citizens to victory.
A follower of the famous philosopher Pythagoras, Milo once saved his friends. It happened that the roof of the hall where the Pythagoreans were meeting began to collapse. Milo stood and supported the central pillar until the others escaped to safety and then dashed out, saving himself.
In the end, however, all of this fame and strength did not save Milo from a less than glorious death. Milo was wandering through the forest when he found an old tree trunk with wedges inserted into it. In an attempt to test his strength, Milo placed his hands and, perhaps his feet, into the cleft of the trunk and tried to split apart the wood. He succeeded in loosening the wedges, which fell out, but the trunk closed on his hands, trapping him. There, according to the tale, he fell prey to wild beasts.” http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/Olympics/milo.html

Eye's Wide Open

I read this passage from 2 Kings 6:8-17 and I thought about those who may come here to the forum. There are so many times when we really don't see things as clearly as we should. Sometimes we forget about asking God to help us. He is willing if we just ask. He wants to open our eyes so that we can understand that problem we have at work and discover its solution. He wants to open our eyes to understanding a math or chemistry equation. He wants to be there and help us to discover and open our eyes so that we can understand a Bible verse. He wants to help open our eyes to understanding a medical condition or family relationship problems or understanding our friends. He will open our eyes if we but ask him. I was reminded of this when I read 2 Kings 6:8-17 when I was thinking about this forum. He spoke to me and reminded me that many times we don't have our eyes open to things because we don't ask for His help and guidance. If you have a problem and need a solution, remember to include God and ask for Him to open your eyes to discover the solution. Here now is the text that I read:

8 Now the king of Syria was making war against Israel; and he consulted with his servants, saying, "My camp will be in such and such a place." 9 And the man of God sent to the king of Israel, saying, "Beware that you do not pass this place, for the Syrians are coming down there." 10 Then the king of Israel sent someone to the place of which the man of God had told him. Thus he warned him, and he was watchful there, not just once or twice. 11 Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was greatly troubled by this thing; and he called his servants and said to them, "Will you not show me which of us is for the king of Israel?" 12 And one of his servants said, "None, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom."

13 So he said, "Go and see where he is, that I may send and get him." And it was told him, saying, "Surely he is in Dothan." 14 Therefore he sent horses and chariots and a great army there, and they came by night and surrounded the city. 15 And when the servant of the man of God arose early and went out, there was an army, surrounding the city with horses and chariots. And his servant said to him, "Alas, my master! What shall we do?" 16 So he answered, "Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them." 17 And Elisha prayed, and said, "Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see." Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha." 2 Kings 6:8-17 NKJV

Compassion International

My daughter, Avery, was the first to sponsor a little boy. I got to see her joy whenever Omari's letters came, and when she realized that, with her babysitting money, she was making a huge difference in one child's life. When I was researching my latest book, Any Minute, with Joyce Meyer, I happened on a book titled "Too Small To Ignore," by Compassions' Founder, Wess Stafford. Reading that book made me understand the true meaning of hopelessness caused by poverty. Working with Joyce helped me understand that the true way to find happiness is to do things for other people.

I was scared when I signed up, that I'd have a child depending on me, that I wouldn't be able to be consistent because of a crazy schedule traveling and with book deadlines. But this has been so easy. It doesn't take much time at all. Glory's letters are becoming more and more joyous. The smile on her face, in the last picture she sent me, spread from ear to ear. It made me want to cry to God with gratitude.

I can't wait to go to Tanzania some day and meet her. She is starting to write her letters in English. If you are considering doing this, too, I tell you to run, don't walk, toward this opportunity. It will change the way you see things around you.
The Gauley and Faith

   The Gauley and Trusting God

One day, early in our marriage, Kenny asked me this, “Louise let’s go white water river rafting.” I thought about it and gave him my loving and naïve answer, “Yes.” I say that I was naïve because I really had never gone river rafting before and didn’t know what to expect. I thought that it would be a unique experience and a new adventure.

Kenny informed me that we would be going down The Gauley. With a huge smile on his face he informed me that this was the meanest, badest, cruelest, most ruthless river this side of the Mississippi. I asked him if he thought that I needed to build myself up with experience before attempting this river. He said, “No, we want to get our money’s worth, so let’s go for the best river.”

We arrived near Lansing, West Virginia. Kenny found a cabin for us to stay in. We had a good night sleep and the next morning I was ready to tackle the unknown. Our guide instructed us of the rules on the river and raft. We put on our wet suits and were ready to jump in.

Before we left, I looked over some of the names of the rapids that we were going to face; Pillow Rock, Insignificant, Lost Paddle, Tumblehome, Sweet’s fall, Junkyard, Heaven Help Us, Stair step, Rollercoaster, Rattlesnake, Pure Screaming Hell, and Kevin’s Folly. I was a little disturbed by the names Sweet’s fall, Pure Screaming Hell, Heaven Help Us, and Kevin’s Folly. I was wondering if this trip, down the river, would become Louise’s Folly and Kenny’s Good Laugh.

Our guide informed us that he would explain each rapid before we entered it. He said the main thing to remember is to keep paddling no matter what. This would be the only way we would be able to keep our balance in the raft.

The first rapid would test our skill and I was very determined not to fall out of the raft. The guide said if we should fall out of the raft to make sure we keep feet first as we go down the rapids. I was not planning on going down the river feet first because I made up my mind that I was going to stay right in the raft.

The first rapid was a huge challenge for me. I did lose my balance. Kenny was in front of me on the left side of the raft. As I leaned forward, he went backwards and got me on the nose with his paddle. I lost my balance for the remainder of that rapid but I was lucky and didn’t fall out of the raft. I regained my balance before the next rapid but my nose was killing me.

I was praying to God through each rapid, asking Him to be with me and most of all to be with our captain and guide. It was right before Sweet’s fall that I prayed the hardest. If a person is going to fall out of the raft it will be while going over Sweet’s fall. What makes it so stressful is that there are people watching you on the rocks. They are not really there to cheer you on but to distract you so that you either fall out of the raft or the raft turns over. Our guide knew the river well. He knew where the best place was to ride the falls. As we went over the falls I closed my eyes and said Lord this is it. Ok I know that wasn’t the smartest thing to do but my eyes were not close for too long. We were safe. The raft stayed upright and I was still in it.

I remember one rapid that did put fear in me. Our guide told us about this rapid and what would happen if we should fall out of the boat. He said that if we fell out on the right side of the boat that we could swim with ease to shore. If we fell out on the left side we would have to swim with all of our might so that we wouldn’t get sucked under some rocks and drown. Ok I was a bit nervous because I was on the left side of the raft. I said a very long prayer while we went through that rapid.

Henry David Thoreau said, “Nothing is so much to be feared as fear.” And John Ortberg said, “Fear disrupts faith and becomes the biggest obstacle to trusting God.”

Jesus said, “If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, nothing shall be impossible unto you.” Matthew 17:20

Sometimes we demonstrate our mustard seed faith by just climbing into the boat. I know I did when I climbed into that raft. Other times, we seem to have faith like the Centurion in Matthew 8:5-13. We can just get out of the boat looking to Jesus and walk on water. For most of us our faith in God is made stronger when we go through life’s storms and trials.

A multitude of people had gathered around Christ, pressing Him on every side. They wanted to hear His every word. So to be better heard and seen, Christ entered a boat and sat down. He told the crowd to sit down along the shore and then told them the story of the Sower.

When Christ finished teaching the people, he told his disciples to set sail for the other side. There were still people eager to follow and hear Christ, so they followed Him in their boats.

The Sea of Galilee is well-known for its storms. The disciples, some fishermen, were used to these sudden storms. This storm was different. The Bible says that there was a great wind and the waves were huge. The waves were crashing, and filling the boat to the point that the boat was so full that it would soon sink. The disciples were terrified and thought soon they all would be lost and would drown.

How Christ could sleep during this storm, I do not know. I imagine He was pretty tired. The disciples realized their helplessness. In their desperation they remembered Jesus. It was Jesus who had commanded them to cross this lake. It was their Master who was peacefully sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a pillow.

In their utter desperation the disciples cried out to Jesus, “Master, Master, Don’t you care. We are about to perish here. Lord save us.”

Jesus is aroused by their plea for help. He stands up in the midst of the storm. The wind is blowing against his form. He takes in the scene before Him. He sees the waves crashing against their boat and the boats that are following them. He sees their own boat full of water and beginning to sink. He sees these men, who have braved and weathered many storms, with fear written across their faces.

Jesus lifts His hands up to the sky and says, “Peace, be still.” The wind stops. The waves cease. There is a great calm that settles over the sea. The disciples are filled with total amazement and they are still afraid. Christ asks them, “Why are you so afraid? Where is your faith?” The disciples began, to whisper among themselves, asking is each other, “What kind of man is this that the wind, waves, and sea obey Him?”

So what kind of man is this Jesus? Who is He? John tells us. “In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, and the Word was God. All things were made by Him.”

So how could Christ sleep during the storm? He trusted His Father to protect Him. He wasn’t afraid because He had developed a close relationship with God. He could claim the promises of the Bible. He had memorize the scriptures and kept them close to His heart. And He also had a daily communication with God. Christ could claim Psalms 91. “He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honor him.” Psalm 91:15

My friend, Christ is with us in every storm that we are facing. He is right there in the boat with us. Christ is present during the storm. Whether the storm you are facing is spiritual, economical, emotional, or physical. He is there in the boat. If you are experiencing a death of a love one, He is there. If you are facing tornadoes, floods, or earthquakes, He is there. If you are having problems at work or have lost your job, He is there. If it feels like everyone has abandoned you, He is there. There is no storm too great for Jesus to calm. He won’t leave you. He is still in the boat with you. He still calms storms. He is not afraid.

Friend, you may be scared, but Jesus isn’t. He is waiting for you to say, “Lord save me.” He will never ignore your cry for help. Christ can say to you and your storms, trials, and worries that you are facing in your life, “Peace, be still.” He can calm your storms. He will help you face your life trials and storms. He will give you peace.

Louise

If you are interesting in white water rafting on the Gauley, here is a link that you can go to:http://www.gauley.com/?gclid=COeP07SEl5MCFRSiQQodKAKmYw
http://www.songerwhitewater.com/vacation-packages.php

Praying Like Jesus

Praying Like Jesus

It is early morning. The morning rays are just starting to come over the horizon. Jesus is kneeling. His body is arched forward. Christ’s hair, beard, and clothes are moist by the morning dew. He is praying for God’s guidance and will for the day. Christ asks for strength so that He can serve the crowd and wisdom so that He would not be trapped by the Pharisees’ questions. He is praying for His disciples. Jesus wants them to know that God loves them and wants them to communicate with God like a son with a Father.

The disciple John is the first to awaken. He stretches his arms out, yawns, and rubs the sleep from his eyes. John hears someone snoring. He looks over in the general direction and sees that it is Peter. So that is what woke me up this morning, he thought. John looks around but he doesn’t see Jesus. The others begin to arouse and they also notice that Jesus isn’t with them.
Being fishermen, the disciples are used to getting up early but for some reason they slept in today. Peter begins to stretch and asks the rest, “What’s for breakfast”? “Peter, do you know if Jesus went to bed last night”? asked John. “He’s not here. Hmm. I wonder where he is.” Andrew added, “John, I’m sure Jesus is praying. He always seems so calm and at peace after He has spent time with God. I’m sure we will find Him.”

As the disciples were looking around to find Jesus, Andrew came up to them and said, “I found Jesus.” The other disciples followed Andrew to where Jesus was and are not surprised to see Him praying.

The disciples stood quietly listening to their Masters’ prayer. He is smiling. His facial countenance is glowing, like the sun. As they draw closer, they feel like they are in the very presence of God and angels. When He speaks, his words are flowing with living power. The hearts of the disciples are deeply moved by what they are hearing. His prayer stirs a desire, within them, to be able to pray to God just like Jesus. Their hearts are softened and humbled. They are filled with awe and are momentary unable to speak. Oh they wanted that same connection to God like Jesus had.

Jesus closed his prayer and turns around. He noticed his disciples watching him. Jesus smiles at his beloved disciples and waits. Peter always the spokesman for the group said, “Master, teach us to pray like you.” “Oh Peter, I have been waiting for you to ask me this. You see, I want you to know that my Father is also your Father and He would love to hear you pray to Him. So when you pray, you can say:

“Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be your name,
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our debts,
As we also forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever,
Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer is a simple prayer. It is easy for us to remember and share with others. Jesus shared it on a mountainside when He gave the Sermon on the Mount and also privately with His disciples a little latter.

Now, did it really happen the way that I told this story? I don’t know. I am sure that while the disciples were with Jesus He taught them how to pray. I believe the best place to learn how to pray is by reading the prayers that Jesus prayed and other prayers’ that can be found in the Bible.

What the Lord’s Prayer Means to me:

God loves me so much that He has adopted me into His family. He has adopted you as well. When you accept Christ, you become part of the Christian Family. We become brothers and sisters in Christ. So I am your sister regardless of any differences in race, nationality, religion, and beliefs.

Pastor Mike Tucker explained the phrase “in heaven” in a way that is touching and real. He said, “In scripture, heaven refers to three different things. First, heaven is spoken of as the place where God resides. Next, you have the starry heavens. But heaven is also used to refer to the atmosphere-the air that is around you.

The most common use of the word is for the atmosphere. That means, when Jesus taught us to pray, He wanted us to think of our Father as being present with us at all times. He is as close as the air we breathe. He is involved in every aspect of life-every moment of every day. You can no more get away from God than you can get away from the air you breathe. You can no more live without God than you can live without breathing air.

Heaven is the place where God resides and it is the place you were made for. It is your true home though you have never seen it.”

Since I want God to be Lord of my life, I will want to show reverence and respect for His name. My God is the Creator. His is all powerful. He is to be exalted and praised. The way I can show God love and respect is to show Him that I respect His name. When I tell others that I am a Christian I want to show that I respect that name, Christian, by my words and actions.

There are two ways that God’s kingdom can come. One way is literally at Christ’s second coming and secondly when He becomes Lord of my life. When I submit to His Lordship and ruler ship in my life he becomes my Lord and King. When I pray your kingdom come I am asking Jesus to live in me. When I allow Christ to rule in my life I will want others to see Jesus in me. “Christ in me, the hope of glory.” Col 1:27

I think one of the hardest things for us Christians to understand is God’s will for us. We know that the Bible promises are his will, but what about the everyday concerns like our jobs, pay raises, healing for a love one or friend. Sometimes we pray for something and we honestly think that we are on the same page as God, but what we pray for doesn’t pan out. So what then? Do we lose faith in God? Or should we change our prayer and try to line it up more in accordance to His will.

Before I became pregnant with my last child, I had prayed for about a year for a girl. I figured that since I had two boys already that it wasn’t such a big request to ask for a girl. God had different plans for me. You see, God knew Benny before he was even born. He loved him and wanted him to be. So God did not answer my prayer by giving me a baby girl. I am sometimes a slow learner. It took me a year to realize that I wouldn’t get pregnant until I changed my prayer. So I finally said, “God I really don’t care now. I want another baby. If it is a boy then so be it.” Within the month I was pregnant and of course I knew that this child would be a boy, because God wanted him.

Since then, I have learned to include, in my prayers, your will be done. If I want God to be Lord of my life, I will want to submit everything to Him and trust him to answer my prayers according to His will. I may not understand why He answers things the way He does but I do know that He loves me and that someday my questions will be answered. Someday I will understand why certain prayers were answered the way they were. In the end, I will agree totally with Him, praise Him, and thank Him for doing the right thing for me.

Everything we possess is gifts from God. As Christians, we live in total dependence on Him for our jobs, homes, and families. When I pray give me today my daily bread, I’m saying, Lord, I depend upon you for everything.

I think the next phrase is the hardest for us to pray and to accept, forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Sometimes I forget that God really does want to cast my sins into the deepest parts of the seas. Sometimes I fish them up or allow Satan to bring them up and God has to remind me that they are gone and forgotten, vaporize. He doesn’t want me to feel like I have to keep bringing them up. When we sincerely confess and repent for our sins, we will not make excuses for our actions. I will acknowledge that I am wrong. I will want to quit doing the wrong things and I will desire a different direction.

We are to forgive others like God has forgiven us. When someone sins against us, we are to forgive them freely. We are to ask God to take away any resentment and bitterness that we may feel towards that person.

Last, we are to pray that God will remove temptation from our path. If temptation comes, we are to ask that He will help us resist and deliver us. God is the only one who can deliver us from temptation. We are dependent upon Him. We can gain the victory because Christ was victorious over Satan. We can be victorious through Him. You and I can claim victory over sin today. We can claim His power.

The Lord’s Prayer is a wonderful pattern for us to follow, though we are not limited to just this prayer. There are other wonderful prayers that we can read in the Bible as well. Just remember that God loves us. He loves you friend and He wants to have a daily relationship with you. He wants to communicate with you through prayer, because He is your best Friend.

You may be asking, Louise, how I can make the Lord’s Prayer my own prayer. How do I follow the pattern? So here we go, the Lord’s Prayer in My own Words.

“Father, God, I love you and thank-you for allowing me to be a part of your family. I am grateful that you allow me to be your daughter and that you are as near to me as the very air that I breathe. I feel so much more secure knowing that you are with me. Please surround me with your presence and fill me with your Spirit.

Holy Father, help me never to forget that you are mighty. Help me always to exalt you, give you honor and praise. Help me never to forget that you are God, the Creator, and I am the one you created. Help me to always show respect to you and reverence your name. Help me Father, not to dishonor you by my words and actions. Lord, I want to totally submit myself to you today. I want to be a part of your Kingdom and Government. I want you to be my ruler and rule in my life. I want others to see Jesus in me. I want you to be Lord of my life today. Direct every part of my life-my job, my family, my home, my finances, my friends. I place all of this in your loving hands. Today’s plans, I give to you. My will and desires I turn over to you. Help me to trust you with all of this. Help me to never forget that I am dependent on you for everything. You provide for all of my needs and even supple some of my wants. I pray that your Second Coming will be soon. I offer you my heartfelt thanks for preparing a place in heaven for me. I know that my true home is there with you.

Forgive me of all of my sins. (Be Specific) Cast them in the deepest parts of the sea. Cleanse me and make me clean. Clothe me with Christ righteousness so that when you look at me you will only see Jesus. Help me to forgive others (Can be specific). Help me to show them/him/her love and mercy like you have shown to me. Please take away any bitterness or resentment that I may feel towards them. Keep me from temptation but if I am tempted please make a way of escape for me and deliver me from it.

All this I ask in the precious name of Jesus
Amen

Remember that the prayers in the Bible are a pattern for you to follow. You can talk to God just like you would your very best friend. He loves you and wants to communicate with you. I have found that the prayers in the Bible have a simple format to remember. They usually start with magnifying God, then praising and thanking Him, thanking Him for His love and mercy, asking for forgiveness and cleansing, asking for the Holy Spirit to fill your life, and finally making your request according to His will for your life, amen.

Here are some other prayers in the Bible.
1. Jesus Prayer- John 11:41-42 Raising of Lazarus; John 17 for his disciples and us; Matthew 26:39-44 at Gethsemane; Luke 23:34, 46 to God to forgive and to commit his spirit to God.
2. David’s Prayer- Psalms 51 A Prayer for forgiveness; 1 Chron 29:9-20, Psalms 139
3. Daniel’s Prayer- Daniel 9 Confession of the sin of a nation and his own and to return to Jerusalem and build a sanctuary again.
4. Moses Prayer- Deut 9:26- A Prayer of Intercession; Ex 32:9-14
5. Solomon’s Prayer- 1 King 3:5-15 Prayer for wisdom and understanding
6. Jehoshaphat Prayer- 2 Chron 20:6-13, 15 A Prayer for deliverance from an enemy
7. Asa Prayer- 2 Chron 14:11 A Prayer for Deliverance
8. Hezekiah Prayer- 2 King 19:15-19 Prayer for Deliverance; 2 King 20:1-7
9. Ezra’s Prayer- Ezra 9:15-10:1 For Forgiveness of God’s people sin
10. Nehemiah’s Prayer- Nehemiah 1:5-11 For God’s people
11. Jeremiah’s Prayer- Jeremiah 32:17-19
12. Jude’s Prayer- Jude 24, 25
13. Abrahams Prayer- Gen 18:16-32 Intercessory
14. Paul’s Prayer- Eph 1:15-23; Eph 3:14-21

If you have found any prayers, in the Bible, that have helped you, please feel free to share them with us.
